What does a name like Mystery Oud Unisex Fragrance actually promise? Daniel Josier answers strangely and deliberately, cumin and carrot in the top notes setting an earthy, rooty tone, violet and angelica joining in for something faintly animalic before any wood appears. Iris, incense, oud wood and nutmeg weave a centre of smoke and cool powder. Leather, amber, oud, labdane and musk take the base somewhere dark, resinous and deeply rich. Angelica adds a green, faintly bitter thread that runs underneath the whole of the opening. The opening is deliberately unfamiliar, and it rewards patience richly once the oud and leather take hold in the base. Best kept for grounded, everyday occasions, Mystery Oud from Daniel Josier earns its place there as a woody oriental Eau de Parfum. That balance is exactly what makes Mystery Oud work.
