Why are testers often the biggest fragrance bargains?
Because a tester is the same full bottle sold without its retail box, and often without its cap, so stores typically price it below the sealed bottle of the same size. Of the 50 full bottles priced furthest under the rest of the market today, 14 are testers, no-cap or unboxed bottles (28%), against 9% of all the listings we could price against the market: 3 times their share. Against the sealed bottle of the same fragrance and size, the cheapest tester-style listing is cheaper in 76% of 631 pairs; the median saving across all of them, counting the ones where sealed was as cheap, is 7% (about $9.01). Often, not always: most of the deepest bargains are still sealed bottles. Measured Sep 30, 2026.

964 tester, no-cap or unboxed listings across 891 fragrances from 7 stores today at $50.00 and up. The list keeps the ones that beat the sealed bottle and ranks them by how far under it they sit.
How many of the deepest bargains are testers?
We took every live full bottle that at least one other store also sells at the same size (3,016 listings), and measured how far each store's price sits under the median of the other stores' prices for that bottle. The market includes other stores' testers, which makes the bar harder for a tester to clear, not easier. Keeping each fragrance's deepest listing, 14 of the top 50 are testers, no-cap or unboxed bottles: 28%, against 9% of all the listings measured, or 3 times their share.
That is the case for testers, and it has a limit. The other 36 are sealed bottles, and 15 of those come from one store, Olfactory Factory LLC. A discounter pricing a sealed bottle low beats a tester elsewhere often enough that the packaging label alone is never the whole answer; the comparison on the exact bottle is.

How much cheaper is a tester than the same bottle sealed?
For every fragrance and size with both a live tester-style listing and a live sealed bottle (631 today), the cheapest of each, at any store. The tester was cheaper in 76% of pairs. Across all of them, the median saving is 7%, with the middle half between 1% and 14%. 15% of pairs save 20% or more and 7% save 30% or more: the long tail is where the headline bargains live.
Unlike the tester list, these figures keep the 151 pairs where a sealed bottle was already as cheap or cheaper, so the median is not flattered by leaving the losers out. 38 pairs more than 30% dearer or more than 75% cheaper than sealed are left out as likely listing faults. Whether that saving is worth it for your own purchase, gift or shelf, is the question are fragrance testers worth it answers.
| Tester against sealed | Pairs | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Sealed as cheap or cheaper | 151 | 24% |
| 1 to 9% less | 220 | 35% |
| 10 to 19% less | 167 | 26% |
| 20 to 29% less | 47 | 7% |
| 30 to 39% less | 21 | 3% |
| 40 to 49% less | 13 | 2% |
| 50 to 75% less | 12 | 2% |
Does the label change the saving?
| Listed as | Median under sealed | Pairs |
|---|---|---|
| Tester or bottle sold without its cap | 5% | 86 |
| Tester with its cap | 3% | 84 |
| Tester, cap not stated | 9% | 444 |
| Unboxed or plain white box | 10% | 21 |
Classed from what the store's own listing says ("tester no cap", "with cap", "unboxed"), each against the cheapest sealed bottle of the same size. Groups with fewer than 20 pairs are not shown.
Are tester bargains bigger on niche or expensive bottles?
| Segment | Median under sealed | Pairs |
|---|---|---|
| Niche houses | 7% | 70 |
| Designer and untagged | 7% | 553 |
| Sealed under $100 | 8% | 234 |
| Sealed $100 to $199 | 7% | 332 |
| Sealed $200 and up | 10% | 65 |
The typical percentage is much the same across segments and price bands (within 3 points), so the dollar saving grows with the price of the bottle: the same share off a $250 bottle is worth several times what it is on a $70 one. Segments follow the catalog's own category tags; many fragrances carry none and sit in the designer and untagged group. Rows with fewer than 20 pairs are not shown.

Widely stocked bottles, one per house, from the same pairs as the median above (7%): chosen to be recognisable, not to be the biggest gaps, so read them next to it. Prices move; each fragrance page lists every seller's current price by size, testers labelled, and the live tester list ranks all of them.

Why are testers priced lower?
Testers are typically produced for store demonstration: the bottle a counter lets you spray. The ones that reach discounters typically come without the retail carton, in a plain box or none, and often without the decorative cap. Without the presentation that makes a bottle a gift, the store prices it as what it is: a full bottle for your own shelf.
The rest of the discount is the channel. Discounters buy surplus and parallel stock and sell without boutique overhead, the same routes that make their sealed bottles cheaper, set out in why fragrance discounters are cheaper. That is also why a sealed bottle at a sharp discounter can beat a tester at a dearer one, and why the comparison on the exact bottle matters more than the label.
What do you give up with a tester?
The packaging, and nothing else we can measure. A tester is the identical fragrance in plain packaging, made for store counters: no retail carton, often no cap, sometimes a label marking it not for sale. That costs you the gift presentation, resale appeal and, on a no-cap bottle, the cap that protects the sprayer. We always label testers and unboxed bottles on the deal, so you know which one you are buying. What each store sells and how, and what we do not check, is on the authenticity page.
And sometimes the discount itself: in 24% of today's pairs the sealed bottle was as cheap or cheaper somewhere, which makes the tester the strictly worse buy. The tester list leaves those out for that reason.
A tester is not a warning sign; a price far below every other seller of the same bottle is. The checks that hold up for a bottle in hand are in how to spot a fake fragrance.
Common questions about tester bargains
- Are testers the biggest fragrance bargains?
- Often, and more often than their numbers alone would explain. Ranking every live full bottle we can compare by how far it sits under the other stores' price for the same bottle, 14 of the top 50 are testers, no-cap or unboxed bottles, while such listings are 9% of everything measured. The rest of the top is sealed bottles, so a tester is a good place to look, not a guarantee. Measured Sep 30, 2026.
- How much cheaper is a tester than the sealed bottle?
- A median 7% below the cheapest sealed bottle of the same fragrance and size, with the middle half of pairs between 1% and 14%; 15% of pairs save 20% or more. That is across 631 live pairs, counting the ones where the sealed bottle was as cheap or cheaper.
- Is a no-cap tester cheaper than one with a cap?
- Slightly, on our numbers: bottles listed without a cap come in a median 5% under the sealed bottle (86 pairs), testers listed with their cap 3% (84 pairs), measured Sep 30, 2026.
- Why are testers sold so cheaply?
- Testers are typically produced for store demonstration and reach discounters without retail packaging, so they are sold as a plain-box or no-box full bottle rather than a presentation piece. The discount reflects packaging and channel, not a weaker liquid.
- Is a tester the same fragrance as the sealed bottle?
- A tester is the identical fragrance in plain packaging, made for store counters. What differs is the packaging: a plain or white box, or none, frequently no cap, and sometimes a label marking it not for sale. Batches can differ between any two bottles, tester or not.
- Are cheap testers a sign of a fake?
- No; a tester is not a warning sign on its own. A price far below every other seller of the same bottle is. We treat a sealed bottle more than 4 times the tester price, over 75% off, as a likely listing fault and leave it out of every figure here.
