Is the bigger bottle better value?

Yes, per millilitre, in 95% of cases. Across 923 fragrances we price live in both 50 ml and 100 ml, the 100 ml bottle costs a median 27% more than the 50 ml for twice the liquid, which makes it 37% cheaper per ml. Whether that is better value for you depends on finishing the bottle. Measured Sep 30, 2026.

Each row compares the same fragrance with itself: same house, same concentration, two bottle sizes, each at its cheapest live price across every store we track. Medians, so one oddly priced bottle cannot move the figure. Steps with fewer than 20 fragrances priced in both sizes are left out rather than shown.

Why the 100 ml wins on paper

Doubling the liquid does not double the price. On the same fragrance, the 100 ml costs a median 27% more than the 50 ml, so each millilitre comes out 37% cheaper per ml. Packaging, handling and shipping do not scale with the amount of liquid, so part of the price of any bottle is fixed, and the bigger bottle spreads it over more millilitres.

The exception is real but small: in 5% of pairs the 50 ml was already as cheap or cheaper per millilitre at its cheapest store. That is why the fragrance page, which prices every size at every seller, beats the rule of thumb.

When is the smaller bottle the better buy?

When you will not finish the big one. A per-ml saving only exists if the millilitres get used; half a 100 ml bottle left on the shelf cost more per worn millilitre than a finished 50 ml. We do not measure how fast anyone wears a fragrance, so this is the part of the decision the numbers cannot make for you.

When you are still deciding. If you have not worn a fragrance for a few weeks, the cheaper test is smaller still: the measured premium for a decant is on decant or full bottle.

When a different concentration is the real choice. Size is not the only lever on value: the same scent in EDT and EDP is priced differently per ml, measured on price per ml by concentration. How the concentrations compare on wear is on which concentration lasts longest.

Common questions about bottle sizes

Is 100 ml better value than 50 ml?
Per millilitre, almost always: on the same fragrance the 100 ml costs a median 27% more than the 50 ml and works out 37% cheaper per ml, across 923 fragrances priced in both sizes on Sep 30, 2026. The larger bottle was cheaper per ml in 95% of those pairs.
Is a 30 ml bottle a waste of money?
Not a waste, but the most expensive way to buy a full bottle per millilitre. Moving from 30 ml to 50 ml of the same fragrance costs a median 30% more and is 22% cheaper per ml (254 pairs). A 30 ml is the right buy when you are not sure you will finish a bigger one.
Do the largest bottles keep getting cheaper per ml?
Mostly. Stepping from 100 ml to a 150-200 ml bottle of the same fragrance is a median 27% cheaper per ml, for 36% more up front (275 pairs). Fewer fragrances are sold that large, so the choice exists less often.
Does perfume go off before I finish a big bottle?
Kept away from heat and light, most fragrances last years once opened, but top notes can fade and some compositions change sooner. We do not measure shelf life, so the honest rule is price arithmetic plus your own pace: if a 100 ml would take you many years to finish, the per-ml saving may never be realised.
